CHANGE! Über Literatur und Kunst in Protestkulturen Mittelosteuropas und Nordafrikas

CHANGE! Ein Wort, das sich wild an jeden Anfang stellt und kraftvoll seinen Raum einfordert: Die Umbrüche in Mittel- und Osteuropa in den 1990er Jahren und die Proteste in Nordafrika vor nunmehr fünf Jahren unter ein gemeinsames Dach eines internationalen Literaturprojekts zu stellen, scheint auf den ersten Blick ein gewagtes Unterfangen zu sein, fanden die Proteste doch unter völlig verschiedenen Bedingungen statt und sind politisch, kulturell und historisch nur schwer zu vergleichen. Und dennoch: Was sie verbindet, ist der Systemkollaps, ist die Rolle von Literatur, Kunst und Musik vor, in und nach den Protesten und Umbrüchen; was sie eint, ist aber auch das Vakuum danach, die Stille nach dem Schrei, das Verwischen der Buchstaben. Auf neue Denk- und Handlungsfreiräume folgten nicht selten Lähmungserscheinungen und Rückwärtsorientierungen. Die Re-Politisierung von Kultur und Literatur in diesen Ländern ist dabei übergreifendes zentrales Merkmal, für viele Literatur- und Kulturschaffende begann ein neues kulturelles Zeitalter. Zugleich sind es vor allem sie, die besonders gefährdet und politisch im Visier der Beharrungskräfte sind: während der Krisen als Destabilisierungsgefahr alter Systeme, nach den Krisen als zu kritische Instanz in der Begleitungen gesellschaftlicher Veränderungsprozesse. Das Projekt CHANGE! bringt Schriftsteller, Künstler, Kuratoren und Kulturvermittler aus Nordafrika und Mittelosteuropa ins protesterfahrene Stuttgart, um Erfahrungen über die Grenzen hinweg zu debattieren, auszutauschen und sie breit zu vermitteln. Die Verschiedenheit der politischen, religiösen und kulturellen Systeme der einzelnen Länder und Kulturräume verstehen wir dabei als Chance, nicht als Hindernis neuer übergreifender Allianzen und zukünftigen Perspektiven. Denn jenseits ihrer analytischen und dokumentarischen Funktion wohnt der Literatur, der Kunst immer auch ein utopisches, öffnendes Moment inne. Hören wir zu, sprechen wir darüber. CHANGE! It is a word pushing its way to the front, to the start, a word demanding its own space. To bring the upheavals in Central and Eastern Europe in the Nineties and the protest movements in Northern Africa five years ago together as the subject matter of a common international project in literature – that seems at first glance an almost foolhardy attempt, since these protests have occurred under completely different circumstances and are difficult to compare politically, culturally and historically.
And yet: They are connected by the basic experience of a collapsing system – as well as by the role of literature, art and music before, during and after the protest demonstrations. What connects them is also the vacuum after the event, the silence after the outcry, the fading of the letters. The opening of new spaces for thought and action is often followed by a certain paralysis and retrogression. An important sign of the times in these countries is the re-politicization of culture and literature. For many writers and artists a new cultural epoch began. At the same time these artists are watched and threatened by the forces of stasis – during the crisis as a dangerous force for destabilization of the old system, after as unwelcome critical observers of social change.
The CHANGE! Project brings authors, artists, curators and publicists from Northern Africa and from Central and Eastern Europe to Stuttgart (a city with a certain experience of protest demonstrations) to discuss the various experiences transnationally, to exchange information and to reach out to the public. We regard the differences between the political, religious and cultural systems of the various countries and cultural regions involved as an opportunity for new alliances and future perspectives, not as an obstacle. Literature and art possess beyond their analytical and documentary functions a utopian quality, they encourage opening up. Let us listen, let us talk. We are looking forward to your visit!
