Nora Amin: An enemy of the people: the journey to survival

Kairo, Sommer 2013. Die Muslimbrüder regieren in Ägypten. Inmitten dieser turbulenten postrevolutionären Phase spielt die von Nora Amin gegründete unabhängige Theatergruppe LaMusica auf den Straßen von Kairo ihre zeitgenössische Adaption von Henrik Ibsens gesellschaftskritischem Drama „Ein Volksfeind“ (1882). Es entsteht – trotz Ausgangssperre, gewalttätiger Ausschreitungen auf dem Tahrir-Platz und Regimewechsel – eine Inszenierung, die ebenso im Wandel begriffen ist wie die politische Situation. Ein Jahr lang hat der Dokumentarfilmmacher Ibrahim Ghareib, der auch bei LaMusica beteiligt ist, diesen Prozess filmisch begleitet und in Gesprächen mit der Regisseurin, Schauspielerin und Schriftstellerin Nora Amin reflektiert. Der Dokumentarfilm „An Enemy Of The People: The Journey To Survival“ (2014, 55 Min., Arabisch mit englischen Untertiteln) ist ein intimes Portrait über das Theater als Werkzeug im alltäglichen Überlebenskampf, über das Zusammenhalten einer Theatergruppe und über ihre Interaktion mit dem Publikum. Im Anschluss an den Film führt die Journalistin Esther Saoub ein Gespräch mit Nora Amin.

Nora Amin, geboren 1970, ist ägyptische Schriftstellerin, Performerin, Choreografin und Theaterregisseurin. 2013 wurde sie vom National Festival of Egyptian Theatre für die beste Regie ausgezeichnet.
Esther Saoub, geboren 1969 in Stuttgart, ist freie Reporterin für ARD und ARTE in der SWR Fernsehredaktion Ausland und Europa. Von 2006 bis 2011 leitete sie das ARD Hörfunkstudio in Kairo.

Cairo during the summer of 2013. The Muslim Brotherhood reigns. During this turbulent post-revolutionary phase the independent theatre group LaMusica (founded by Nora Amin) stages a contemporary adaption of Ibsens’s “An Enemy of the People” (1882) in the streets of Cairo. In spite of curfews, violent confrontations on Tahir square and regime change a workable version is developed which constantly changes with the political situation. Ibrahim Ghareib, a maker of documentary films connected to LaMusica, has followed this project with his camera und in talks with Nora Amin, the director, actress and author. The documentary movie “An Enemy of the People: The Journey to Survival” (2014, 55 min., Arabic with English subtitles) is an intimate portrait of theatre as a tool in the everyday fight for survival, of the solidarity of an ensemble and its interaction with the public. After the show the journalist Esther Saoub will talk with Nora Amin.

Nora Amin, born 1970, is an Egyptian writer, performer, choreographer and theatre director. In 2013 she was named best director by the National Festival of Egyptian Theatre.
Esther Saoub, born 1969 in Stuttgart, is a freelance journalist for ARD and Arte, working in the editorial department of the SWR. From 2006 until 2011 she was head of the ARD radio studio in Cairo.
