Hawa el Horreya (Whims of Freedom): Laila Soliman, Nanda Mohammad, Zainab Magdy, Alia Mossalam, Mustafa Said

Fast 100 Jahre nach der ägyptischen Revolution von 1919 holt die ägyptische Theatermacherin, Schriftstellerin und Regisseurin Laila Soliman in der Performance "Hawa el Horreya" (Whims of Freedom) die Vergangenheit in die Gegenwart. Die Verknüpfung historischen Materials aus dem Leben zweier Theaterdiven - der ersten muslimischen Frauen, die je auf der Bühne spielten und somit eine Revolution im Theater und im Leben vieler muslimischer Frauen hervorriefen - mit den persönlichen Erzählungen beider Schauspielerinnen in der Performance, zieht unvermeidliche Parallelen zu den Umbrüchen in Ägypten und in Syrien der letzten Jahre. Leila Soliman entwickelte diese Performance zusammen mit Alia Mossalam, Mustafa Said und die beiden Schauspieler: Nanda Mohammad, und Zainab Magdy. Dauer: 60 Min.

Almost a hundred years after the Egyptian revolution of 1919 the Egyptian author and theatre director Laila Soliman has brought the past into the present with her performance “El Hawa Horreya (Whims of Freedom)”. Connecting historical material from the lives of two prominent actresses – the first muslimas ever performing on a stage, thus inaugurating a revolution in the theatre and in the lives of many women – with the personal stories of the two women acting in the performance, it inevitably also connects with the changes in Egypt and Syria during the last years. As a result we see a world where stage and politics are closely interrelated. The historical fight against the ruling forces – a military regime, a patriarchal society – and against the official propaganda version of events clearly mirrors the present circumstances. The performance “El Hawa Horreya (Whims of Freedom)” is an attempt to understand the past through the present. An era much talked about but hardly understood becomes comprehensible by this exchange of glances. Laila Soliman has created the performance in collaboration with her partner, the Flemish director Ruud Gielens. Performance time: 60 Minutes.
